History Dorothea Mission

Eduard Philip Hans von Staden founder of Dorothea Mission interdenominational faith mission was born on February 27 1905 in Winburg South Africa. His father had emigrated from Germany in 1883 & his mother was descendant of pioneer missionary Güldenpfenning of Berlin Mission. His mother Dorothea von Staden was devout Christian who prayed earnestly for salvation of her children

1923 Hans von Staden enrolled as student of science at University of Stellenbosch in Cape Province

first academic year he experienced increasing inner battle which could be summed up in his questions: “Is GOD after all reality? Has HE made claim on my life?” One evening while walking for hours along beach & praying earnestly he had overwhelming awareness of presence of GOD. This experience did not yet lead to his conversion but from that moment onwards Hans von Staden could no longer doubt existence of GOD & that ALMIGHTY ONE indeed had claim on his life. He prayed earnestly concerning GOD’s guidance for his future

decisive turning point in his life came one evening in July 1926 when he became intensely aware of presence of GOD JESUS CHRIST. Hans von Staden surrendered himself unconditionally to HIM & rose from his knees as born-again child of GOD. Now he could no longer doubt at all that he had to dedicate his life to LORD’s service

In 1927 after having obtained his B.Sc. degree he was appointed traveling secretary of Student’s Christian Association for one year. It was strenuous but richly blessed year in his Master’s service

Afterwards Hans von Staden joined Africa Evangelical Band (AEB) which was founded in 1924. During first years he served as Evangelist both in South Africa & Zimbabwe (Southern Rhodesia at that time) & in 1931 he was called to East Africa

In 1932 he felt clearly guided by GOD to ask Lettie Prinsloo to become his wife. Lettie was converted at age of 14 & her mother deeply devout child of GOD was descendant of Huguenots. Hans & Lettie had met as students at Stellenbosch University. After career in teaching she clearly heard GOD’s call into full-time service & joined Africa Evangelistic Band. Hans & Lettie von Staden were married on December 20 1932 & GOD blessed them with seven children three sons & four daughters

Hans & Lettie von Staden served LORD together in East Africa until their mission society called them back to South Africa in 1934. Eight years later Hans von Staden heard unexpected call. following is quote from booklet I Heard HIS Call:

It was during February 1924 that my wife & I visited her parents in Lindley in Orange Free State. lovely shade of willows on banks of Vals River was my chosen spot for Bible study & prayer early in day. One morning I became peculiarly conscious of wonderful presence of LORD. Deep in my heart I heard HIS voice: We were to dedicate our lives to evangelization of souls in townships of South Africa. At that time they were still called old “locations,” many of them being terrible slum areas

It was sudden & unexpected call. Should someone ask me how I knew it to be LORD’s call I would not be able to explain or prove it. But to me it was matter of absolute certainty. Servants of GOD who know HIS voice will be able to appreciate my experience. Until that moment I had never once thought about work for GOD in locations. I had almost no knowledge about them. But I was assured of Divine call. Naturally I returned home to tell my wife. At that moment she too became conscious deep in her heart that it was GOD calling us

Right from beginning it became clear to Hans von Staden that their new work for LORD should be entirely “faith work,” not asking anyone for financial support but trusting GOD alone to undertake in every way

first most important step was to train African evangelists for this new work. This necessitated opening of training centre. via Christian friend Hans von Staden learned about farm to be sold on outskirts of Pretoria which seemed ideal as mission station & training centre. However they had no funds to buy this property. They took their project to GOD in prayer & pleaded HIS promises. One day before final decision was to be taken as to whether they would purchase this property or not mother unexpectedly visited her son & daughter-in-law. She lived in different province of South Africa & knew nothing about their situation. Quite unexpectedly she told them that GOD had clearly spoken to her that she should donate substantial sum of her savings to be used in their work for LORD. What remarkable answer to prayer

When newly founded mission had to receive name Hans von Staden could think of only one name: Dorothea Mission. After all his mother Dorothea von Staden had been used by GOD to lay financial foundation of work & “Dorothea” means “Gift of GOD.” one great aim of this new mission society was to take message of salvation–Gospel–as “Gift of GOD” to multitudes of souls living in “locations” which had spread far & wide mainly on outskirts of towns of South Africa. They were to large extent result of more & more people leaving rural areas to seek work in towns

GOD continued to guide work step by step & blessed it. He called black Christians to be trained as evangelists & soon first white believers also heard GOD’s call into this ripe harvest field. GOD also provided increasing number of friends to pray for Dorothea Mission & to support its work. Later on some applicants also came from European countries to serve LORD in Dorothea Mission

In 1960 Hans von Staden travelled to Zimbabwe & Zambia to attend crusades held by Dr. Billy Graham. It made tremendous impression on him to see how African people gathered in thousands to hear Gospel. When he drove with friend via densely populated townships of Bulawayo (second largest city of Zimbabwe) he was overwhelmed by sight. Here he was confronted by same spiritual needs as in South Africa. As he wrestled in prayer seeking GOD’s will & guidance it became clear to him that GOD was calling Dorothea Mission to extend its work beyond borders of South Africa

first new mission field became Namibia in 1961. In 1962 Dorothea Mission held major evangelistic crusade on outskirts of Harare in Zimbabwe. This opened door to permanent work in Zimbabwe including training centre for evangelists. Then work extended to Malawi & Zambia. Also in 1995 Dorothea Mission began to work for first time in Mozambique. altogether 60 workers serve LORD on full-time basis with Dorothea Mission in six countries

crusades of Dorothea Mission consist mainly of tent meetings. evangelists also hold children’s meetings & do house visitation. Evangelistic work is done in schools & patients are visited in hospitals. Converts are encouraged to join CHRIST centered congregations. years invitations for evangelistic crusades received from different churches including Dutch Reformed Church of which Hans Von Staden was member. evangelists follow-up work to strengthen new believers in their faith. mission has its own media department. Christian literature published in 15 languages & to limited extent Gospel is broadcast radio. many years LORD grace richly blessed missionary work of Hans von Staden & workers in Dorothea Mission

August 21 1986 Hans von Staden called to glory his son Prof. Paul von Staden took over most of administrative responsibilities as acting director. 1993 GOD called Rev. Eben Louw as new full-time director. succeeded by Rev. Neels Els minister of Dutch Reformed Church. Rev. Els served from 1998 to June 2002. Since his departure Prof. Paul von Staden is once again acting director as well as chairman of council of Dorothea Mission

Philippians 4:19 “My GOD will meet all your needs according to HIS glorious riches in CHRIST JESUS.” As faith work being entirely dependent on LORD’s provision. Dorothea Mission longs to be true to GOD’s call to very end so that HE can fully accomplish HIS eternal purpose via its ministry to glory of HIS Name. “Therefore my dear brothers stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to work of LORD because you know that your labour in LORD is not in vain” (1 Corinthians 15:58)

Tracts effective tool in personal evangelism. Although we mainly print tracts for our own use some of our friends order tracts from us to distribute in their area. If you burdened to reach out to people in your area you should consider distribution of tracts

Headquarters of Dorothea Mission at 30 km north west of Pretoria

● Bible College

Students follow three year full-time course & are trained as evangelists. Mr Joseph Nota is principal & there are 3 other full-time staff members as well as some part-time lecturers

staff need great wisdom to train students who come from various backgrounds & cultures. We pray that each student who has finished his or her training will be well-equipped & fit instrument for work to which LORD calls him or her. May LORD call more students to work in our mission

Here messages in Chewa & Shangaan recorded which broadcasted via transmitters of Trans World Radio Swaziland to listeners in Malawi Zambia & Mozambique. Audio cassettes & CD's with Gospel messages also available

● South Africa Evangelism Team

evangelism team holds outreaches in townships on farms & in rural areas. team usually consists of 4 to 6 members

Outreaches for 10 days to 3 weeks in area. daily programme usually consists of:

time of Bible study & prayer for team members & others who interested e.g. those who invited them local church leaders or converts house visiting if possible children’s meeting or open-air meeting in afternoon & evangelistic meeting in evening

Evening meetings can be held in church building community hall at school or tent. At times we use our own tent when practically possible. team gladly makes use of opportunities to share Word at schools clinics or any suitable place where people gathered

Each outreach has it’s own challenges & problems to cope with. Wisdom & guidance of HOLY SPIRIT essential in personal work & counselling. Greatly dependent on LORD for HIS blessing on each outreach

● Hospital Ministry

In Pretoria we have wonderful open doors at Steve Biko Hospital where Zandra Nel from Dorothea Mission serves full-time. She often has opportunities to share Gospel with patients or relatives whilst at other times she is able to comfort & support them emotionally & show love of CHRIST to them in their hour of need. This is also vast harvest field & we thank LORD for people who find assurance of salvation
